Mrs. Chas. Shalla Dead
Mrs. Ethel Fern Shalla, wife of Charles Shalla, aged 23 years, died Thursday evening at 8:30 at home of her brother, Fred Coakley, in Washington after an illness of two weeks.
She stepped on a hedge thorn at the Shall home in the Prairie Flower neighborhood two weeks ago and lockjaw developed, since when she had been in a critical condition. Everything possible was done to save her life, with without avail.
Mrs. Shalla was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Coakley and was born in Fulton, Ill., Dec 17, 1897. She was married to Charles Shalla Dec. 25, 1915 at Iowa City and all of their life was lived in the community southwest of Kalona.
Surviving her are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Coakley of the West Chester community: two children, Duane and Dolores; two brothers Fred Coakley of Washington and one sister Reva Coakley who also lives with her parents.
When a young girl Mrs. Shalla made a profession of religion at the United Brethren church in Highland township and lived a splendid, helpful life in her home community, evidencing the influence of Christian teachings on her character. She will be sadly missed in her home circle.
Funeral services were held at the Washington Baptist church Saturday afternoon at 2:30 and were conducted by Rev. E.A. Anderson pastor of the Prairie Flower Baptist church. Burial was made in the Elm Grove cemetery- Wash Journal
