Thomas was born in Hamilton Village, Glasgow, Scotland, and came to the United States in 1874, with his family, and settled in Massilon, Ohio, in a village called Newman, 7 miles from Canal Fulton. The family homestead is 107 years old, and located near Canal Fulton, Ohio. Thomas had 14 brothers and sisters. His father was not in good health and returned to Scotland. He died shortly after. His wife Ann, moved to Oklahoma with two of her boys, Thomas and Gordy, to be with her relatives in Krebs. The boys found work in the coal mines. Her married children stayed in Ohio, and Scotland.
