Garland Willis Beard, 82, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 24, 2006, in Waco, Texas, after a lengthy illness. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, August 27, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home. Services will be at 10 a.m., Monday, August 28, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 515 Columbus Avenue, Waco, with the Rev. Chuck Treadwell officiating. Burial will follow in Bosqueville Cemetery beside his wife.

Garland was born in Waco, Texas, to the late Virgil Alvin Beard and Una Grace Beard. He was a graduate of Waco High School and he served our country in the Merchant Marines during World War II. On Dec. 5, 1947, he married Prebble Irene Holladay and they shared 46 happy and memorable years together.

Garland worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company as an installer, repairman and combination man, retiring in 1987 after 38 years of service.He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. He loved tinkering in his workshop and his life-long hobby was buying and restoring old vehicles. He was also an avid Dallas Cowboys fan.

Garland was preceded in death by his wife; and sisters: Dorothy Boleman, Julie Martin Nelson, Virgie Ryon, Ann Harris, and Lana Kay Anderson.

Survivors include his daughters, Cynthia Burgess and husband, Albert, of Waco, and Deborah Rudden and husband, Richard, of Birmingham, Ala.; grandsons, Clifton Burgess and Kent Farr; granddaughters, Lisa Rudden, Allison Burgess, and Blaire Rudden; sister, Donna Sue Harper, of Waco; other relatives and many friends.
