Rev. Affeldt was born in Wykoff, Minnesota in 1876. In 1892 he entered Concordia Theological Seminary in Springfield, Illinois and graduated in 1899. His first assignment was teaching in sod schoolhouses and in Nebraska. In 1900 he moved to Waltham, Minnesota where he taught parochial school and founded St. John's church in Austin.

He married Martha Asche of Altenberg, Missouri on May 17th, 1900. They resided in Elgin, Minnesota for many years and had 13 children
