DeSmet - James Dean Bowes. 66. rural De Smet. SD. died. Thursday. September 2, 2010 at his home after a long battle with lung cancer. Services have been set for 10:30am, Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at United Church Of Christ in De Smet, with Rev. Dick Poppen officiating. Burial will follow in the Manchester Cemetery. Visitation hours will be 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Tuesday. September 7, at the United" Church Of Christ. Osthus Funeral Home in De Smet is in charge of arrangements.
J ames Dean Bo w es was born February 26, 1944 to parents Merle and Leila (Beck) Bowes at Huron, SD. James attended Ferguson Grade School through the 8th grade and then graduated from De Smet High School in 1962. He entered the US Air Force in 1965 and was honorably discharged in 1968 after serving one year in Takhli, Thailand. After his discharge James attended Topeka Business College in Topeka, KS.
He was united in marriage to Janis Gail Hanson at Grand Forks. ND on August 10. 1968. James worked at the state capitol building as a computer operator until 1970 when he and his wife Janis moved Manchester, SD to farm and ranch the Bowes family farm.
James served as the Manchester Township Clerk from 1974 to 2010. He was also the Manchester Cemetery Sexton from 1974 to 2010. H e enjoyed collecting antiques. His favorite was his collection of songs from the 1950's to modern day rock-n-roll and country music songs. He had over 5000 songs collected. He had an antique barbed wire collection of over 400. He had many other collections such as beer cans, bottle cappers, egg scales, calf weaners, can and bottle openers, marble games, and corn dryers. He was always ready for a good card game, especially Texas Holdem.
He is survived by his wife Janis, Manchester, SD; son Jason Bowes, De Smet, SD; daughter, Jessica Roob, Sioux Falls, SD; a grandson Caden Roob, Sioux Falls, SD; brothers, lerry (Deanna) Bowes, Okanogen, WA, David (Judy) Bowes, Custer, SD; nephew Brian (Jayne) Bowes; niece, Desi Cantlon, both of Okanogen, WA.
He was preceded in death by his Parents
