John was 18 when he joined the Army at Quincy, IL., February 11, 1865. He was mustered in the same day and mustered out at Nashville, TN on September 5, 1865 with the rank of Private having served with Company F, 148th Illinois Infantry. John had blue eyes, fair complexion and was 5'5 1/2" tall. At the time of his enlistment he was single and farmed.
