John was an avid reader, self-taught Bible scholar, and ordained Methodist minister. Though never a pastor of a church, for 30 years he preached at various churches upon request. John's limited formal education prevented him from being a member of the Methodist Conference, but he was recognized and respected by well-known ministers who were members. At any meeting or convention he attended, his presence was acknowledged by whoever was speaking from the podium.
