Funeral for Dr. Virgil Albert Pate Jr.,53, Abilene urologist, will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in St. Paul Methodist Church with Dr. Frank Charlton, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. E.P. Dentzer, rector of the Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest.

Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park under the direction of Elliott's Funeral Home.

Dr. Pate died at 12:35 p.m. Monday in Hendrick Memorial Hospital's intensive care unit after suffering a stroke at his home at 1709 River Oaks Rd. Sunday, Pallbearers will be Dr. Royce Pruet, Dr. I.J. Webster, Dr. J.A. McGee, Dr. David Pugh, Dr. Mac Bowyer, Dr. Dale Johnson, Dr. Charles Meadows, Dr. George Thurman and Dr. H. Ray Buzbee. Honarary pallbearers will be members of the Taylor Jones Medical Society.

Dr. Pate attended the University of Texas and graduated from the Arkansas School of Medicine 1941, serving his internship at University Hospital at Little Rock 1941-1942.

From 1942-1946 he served as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army, serving as surgeon for XXIII Corps in the European Theatre. He was awarded the Bronze Star. Following the war, Dr. Pate was a resident of urology at McGuire Virginia Hospital in Richmond, Va from 1946-50. He had practiced urology in Abilene since 1951 when the family moved here. He was on the staff of all local hospitals and consultant at Dyess AFB Hospital. He was a past president of the surgical section of Hendrick Memorial Hospital. His offices were at 1109 N. 19th. Professional memberships included the American Medical Association, American Urological Association, American College of Surgeons, Taylor-Jones County Medical Association and Texas Medical Association.

He was born August 10, 1914 in Murfreesboro, Ark. and moved as a child to Texarkana, Tex. where he attended public schools and was raised. He married Dorothy Dollarhide Aug. 16, 1939 in Hope, Ark. He was a member of St. Paul Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife of the home, a son Virgil Albert III, a student at Southwestern Medical School at Dallas, four sisters, Mrs. W.E. DeLong of Texarkana, Tex., Mrs. James H. Jones of Hope, Ark., Mrs. Dana A. Blocker of Sherman, Mrs. Gene Harrelson of Arkadelphia, Ark. Two brothers, Dr. W. W. of Shreveport and James Carter of Dallas.

The family requests that remembrances be in the form of donations to the church or favorite charity.
