Jerry W. Hysell, age 85, of Mount Vernon died Saturday June 12, 2010 at the Laurels of Mount Vernon. Jerry was born January 23, 1925 in Huntington, West Virginia to Eli and Myrtle F. (Adams) Hysell in Huntington, West Virginia. Jerry lived with his daughter Shirley Ann Martin in Mount Vernon. Jerry rode a jingle bike and sold ice cream from it when he was 15 years old. He also drove a truck for Mayflower Transfer Company and worked at Elese’s Ice Cream Store in Ceredo, West Virginia, making and selling ice cream for many years. “He did love his ice cream.” Jerry retired after 32 years from Heiner’s Bakery in Huntington as the head dough maker. He also ran a small store selling groceries and fish bait in Chesapeake, Ohio where he resided for 50 years.

As a pastime and hobby, Jerry repaired TV’s and was a self-taught electrician. He wired many homes and businesses in and around the Huntington area. Jerry loved to fish with his brothers and friends rode a bicycle for transportation and later a three-wheeled battery powered Palmer.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Myrtle (Chandler) Hysell; his second wife, Mary (Ross) Hysell; a step son-in-law, Ralph McCallister; a step grandson, James McCallister; great grandson Mikeal McCallister; brothers and sisters-in-law Hack (Liz), Bud (Virginia), Delmar (Helen), Clarence Hysell, sister Mary (Thurman) Rice and brother-in-law Ovel Bar.

Surviving are his daughter, Shirley Ann (Leonard) Martin of Mount Vernon; step daughter, Dorothy McCallister of Mount Vernon; sister Clara Bar of Huntington, sister-in-law Martha Hysell of South Point, Ohio, a granddaughter Misty Martin, a step grandson Ron McCallister, great grandchildren Jeanna (Adam) Wade, Dale McCallister, and Marcie (Adam) Estes; great great grandchildren Alexandria and Kala Estes, Joseph, Isabella and Kent Wade; and several nieces, nephews and many friends.

Friends may call Monday June 14, 2010 from 5pm to 7pm at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050.

Burial will be in Highland Memorial Gardens at South Point, Ohio.
