Don was the son of John M. and Florence (Trowbridge) Peterson, born in Chillicothe, Missouri and raised in the Garden City area. On July 27, 1940, he married Laura L. Carter, and they spent the early years of their marriage in Lakin. When Don returned from service in the Army Air Corps during World War II, he was employed by Lakin Motors as a mechanic, later serving as undersheriff in Kearny County.

The family moved to Ulysses in 1953 for Don to become service manager for Phifer Motor Company where he was employed the remainder of his life. Children: Joyce Donellen, James M., John M. After the death of Laura, Don married in Oct 1965 Naomi (Johnson) Rust and helped raise her children Mike and Sue and an adopted daughter Susan. Don and Naomi were members of the Southern Baptist church in Ulysses.
