Earl was the son of Perl and Amy Owen Birnel and he was a lifetime Tacoma resident. He graduated from Stadium High School and was the product of Tacoma Public School District.
He served in WWII in the Army-Air Core as a clerk typist. After his honorable discharge from the service he returned to Tacoma, WA where he attended the College of Puget Sound, CPS, earning his Bachelor Degree in Education. He played college baseball.
He went on to play professional baseball for four years for the Chicago Cubs. Since this time, he has been the recipient of many, many awards and recognitions. His latest being the CY Greenlaw on May 31, 2015.
His next career was with University Place School District. He served in many capacities at Curtis, teacher, coach, counselor, and administrator. He enjoyed every day in University Place and after all of these years, had continued to meet with the original administrators once a month for lunch to talk about old times.
Earl loved his family immensely and we loved him. We wish to thank each of you for your kindnesses during these difficult times, friends from childhood, members of the Redeemer Lutheran Church, neighbors, and everyone, thank you.
Earl leaves behind his wife, Corinne, two children, Stacy Birnel and Jeff Birnel, his two granddaughters, Lauren Hahn and Little Corinne Pena, his great granddaughter Ruby, and older brother Richard.
He will forever be in our hearts.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2015 at 12:00 noon at the main chapel at New Tacoma Cemetery & Funeral Home, 9212 Chambers Creek Rd. W. University Place, WA 98467
