Mary Elizabeth Minear is the daughter of Rev. Samuel J. and Malinda (McCollister) Minear. She married William Thornton Sanford Smith in Ohio about 1858. They settled in Yellow Bud, Union Township, Ross County, Ohio, and started their family there. By 1870, the family had relocated to Cerro Gordo, Piatt County, Illinois, where her husband worked as a carpenter. In 1880, the family settled in Grant Township, Clark County, Missouri, later moving to the Arbela area in Scotland County, Missouri. The couple had ten children. After her husband's death, Mary lived in Thomson Township, Scotland County, Missouri, with her son Oscar.
