He was the husband of Elsie (Eatock) Wendelschaefer. Born in Providence, a son of the late Felix R. and Ada (Babcock) Wendelschaefer, he had lived in North Kingstown for 55 years.
Mr. Wendelschaefer had worked as a firefighter at Quonset Point and in Charlestown and Newport from 1945 until retiring in 1988.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and served as a firefighter specialist.
He was a past master and former chaplain of Washington Lodge 5 F&AM, and a member of Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley, Providence, Rhode Island Shriners, Cranston, where he also was a past commander and former secretary of the Shriners Legion of Honor. He was a past president of Sword of Bunker Hill and a past patron of the Order of Eastern Star. He served as master, overseer and chaplain of Quidnessett Grange 44, master and chaplain of Quonochontaug Grange 48, and was state master of the Rhode Island State Grange.
Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, F. James Wendelschaefer of Saunderstown and Brian L. Wendelschaefer of Longwood, Fla.; a brother, Franklin Wendelschaefer of Austin, Texas; a sister, Martha Hilbert of Esmond; and five granchildren and four great- grandchildren.
The funeral service will be tomorrow at 11 a.m. in St. John the Divine Episcopal Church, Willett Road. Burial will be in Quidnessett Memorial Cemetery.
