Johnnie was born in northeast Tennessee, the sixth of eleven children of Bruce McQuown Adams and Stella Mae Wills Adams.

Johnnie enlisted in the US Air Force at the age of 20 and was sent to Germany where the Berlin Airlift was in full swing. He made the military his life long career (39 years). After four years in Germany, he was stationed at Lowry AF Base in Denver. He married the love of his life in 1953. In 1963, the Air Force moved the 138th AC&W Squadron to Greeley. Later it became known as 138th Tactical Control Flight Squadron.

Johnnie loved bowling, camping, fishing, and tinkering around the house. After retiring in 1987, he took up genealogy as a hobby and after his wife retired, they purchased a motor home and started going to southern TX for the winters. While in TX, they took up square dancing. After deciding not to return to TX in 2001, they became involved with the Meadowlarks, where Johnnie became the President for two years. In 2003, they joined the Merry Mixers and became “angels” at the square dance lessons. He quickly became their Representative to the North East Square Dance Council and later became President of the Merry Mixers for four years. In 2005, he was elected as Vice President of the Northeast Council and then in November 2008 he took over the duties of the President and served until February 2010. They were inducted into the Square Dance Hall of Fame in 2010. Together they served on both of the hospitality committees for the 2009 State Festival in Greeley and the USA West Convention held in Greeley in 2010. They were also very involved in the Milliken Senior Center for 12 years until his health kept them from attending activities. In 2011, Johnnie was honored to join the Honor Flight to Washington, DC.

Johnnie is survived by his wife of 62 years; two sons; one daughter; seven grandchildren; one brother and one sister. One son preceded him in death.
