Emilia Michaela Espinosa, baptized at St Rosa's Catholic Church in Firebaugh, Fresno, CA on 08 May 1901 ... the daughter of Reyes Espinosa and Felicitas Rodriguez, shared the story of traveling by train, alone, at age 17 from Firebaugh all the way the the East. Moving would be a large part of Emma's life!

Emma K as she was most often called, married the handsome John Henry Hartzell in 1921 in Ohio where he and his widowed mother had moved from their home in Altoona, Pennsylvania. John and Emma's first child, son Virgil Hubert Hartzell was born there in Ohio in 1922 but by 1929 the family was living in San Francisco, CA where John was working as a contractor.

Daughter Velda was born in Fresno County that same year. John and Emma stayed in the Firebaugh, Fresno County area for the next few years but by 1940 they were living in Sunnyvale, Santa Clara County, CA. A year later they sailed to Hawaii and were living there on 07 Dec 1941 when Pearl Harbor was bombed. They returned to CA in Jan 1947.
By 1948 they were once again in San Francisco where John continued to work as a contractor for the building industry and Emma K was a dressmaker working from their home.

In 1955 John and Emma were living in Belmont, San Mateo County, CA where John was working as an FHA Building Inspector. He and Emma K took a trip to Cuba in Sep 1955 flying back into New York International airport.

John died in Belmont in Dec 1964 and Emma K continued to live in their home for almost 30 more years until she moved to Fresno, Fresno County, CA in the mid 1990s to be closer to her daughter Velda.

"Aunt Emma" as she was known to so many continued to live alone in Fresno until she was more than 100 yrs old, still tending her garden almost daily.

The obit for Emma K Hartzell lists her simply as "a homemaker" but everyone who came in contact with this tiny energetic Emilia Michaela, aka Emma K... knew immediately of her quest for adventure.
