At the time of his death, Captain John Meek had been the intimate friend and trusted adviser of all the monarchs of the Hawaiian Islands, beginning with Kamehameha I. He had known the country before the arrival of the missionaries and had a genuine affection for the native people and the Islands. The captain was a man of sound judgment and possessed an instant sense of right and wrong with a fine, calm appreciation of perspective and the fitness of things. He had a profound attachment to Americanism and it was his boast that the Constitution of the United States could serve as a safe model and a sure foundation for government anywhere in the world.
Masonry was enshrined in his heart and he shared with Le Tellier Lodge of Honolulu in the ardent desire to spread the influence and increase the usefulness of the institution.
Captain meek, upon coming ashore to live, established a permanent residence which lasted half a century. He engaged in ranching and farming as had many other retired seafarers and took much pride in the breeding of fine stock. He is credited with introducing a number of items to Hawaii, including and not limited to mangoes, turkeys, cattle, tortoises, etc.
He had served as the Senior Warden for the Le Tellier's Lodge, a Harbor Master and a Government Pilot for Hawaii. He married Betsy W. Meek, and after her death on May 3rd, 1848, he married Elizabeth Kaluapapohana Kamsi on July 31st, 1850.

Honolulu Merchant Looking Glass--"A retired American shipmaster; has resided on those islands a number of years and has aquired a large landed estate. Is a hale, hearty old man of about 70 years and has become very popular from his uprightness and integrity of character, that evil-minded men cannot even slander".
Descendants of Capt. John Meek still reside in Hawaii today.
