ATHENS – Cecelia “Tate” Spencer Baird, 93, passed away on Oct. 26, 2015 at her home, surrounded by her family. She was born in 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of Thomas Ray Spencer and Mary Ellen Harrington Spencer.

Cecelia married her high school sweetheart, Russell Norman Baird, in 1942. As an accomplished typist and wordsmith professional, she worked as an administrative assistant for many years, first at the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Cleveland, Ohio, and Louisville, KY, and later at Ohio University in the College of Education and the College of Business (Accounting Department).

After retirement, she and Russ spent many happy years on their farm near Albany. Cecelia was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Athens, had been in the Catholic Women’s Club, and helped with the St. Vincent DePaul food distribution for many years. More recently, she enjoyed membership in the Art and Thimble Club in Athens.

Beloved as a mother, sister, wife, Granny, aunt and friend, Cecelia was a charming, smart, creative and quick-witted woman. She was meticulous with her home and prized treasures. She loved the rush of acquiring dainty odds and ends at local antique auctions and estate sales. What she enjoyed most in life was spending time with family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her favorite time of the year was late summer when she and her family would travel to Watoga State Park in Marlinton, W.Va. to reunite with her beloved brothers, sisters, in-laws, nieces and nephews. She loved the family sing-alongs, potluck dinners, pinochle games, storytelling and conversations.

Cecelia was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her sisters, Margaret Spencer Jeremiah and Joan Spencer Weise, a brother, Dr. Charles Spencer, and a daughter, Kathryn Reed Baird.

She is survived by a sister, Patricia Maneri (Carl) of Yellow Springs, Ohio; two brothers, Thomas Spencer (Joylette), of Nedrow, NY, and Paul Spencer (Sara) of Simi Valley, CA; five children, Mary Ellen Shaw (Stanley) of Falls Church, Va., Russell J. Baird (Vanessa) of Houston, Margaret Goodwin (John) of Athens, Michael Baird (Kathy) of Pickerington, Ohio, and Jane Baird of Mankato, Minn.; six grandchildren, Brant Baird (Paige) of Houston, Greg Baird (Andrea) of Houston, Erin Risley-Baird (Michael) of Oklahoma City, Krin Goodwin Hupp (James D.) of Arlington Heights, Ill., Matthew Goodwin (Cassie) of Athens and Megan Goodwin Berger (Ian) of Palatine, Ill.; 11 great-grandchildren, Emma and Jackson Hupp of Arlington Heights, Ill., Emmett, Spencer Jane, Mack and Lindy Goodwin of Athens, and Bailey, Blaine, Parker, Scott and Allison Baird, all of Houston; and many nieces and nephews.

During the last few years of her beautifully long life, she was lovingly cared for by staff at the Maplewood of Athens where she befriended many of her caretakers. During her last days, she was cared for by the talented and loving nurses at ACVNA.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Athens Catholic Community Food Pantry (75 Stewart St., Athens, OH 45701).

A memorial Mass will be held Saturday, Nov. 28 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Athens. Burial will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Athens. Arrangements are with Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens. Please share a memory, a note of condolence or sign the online register book at www.jagersfuneralhome.com.
