A funeral service for Samuel "Sam" Lewis Adkins, 65, was held Thurs., Nov. 12, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo with burial to follow at Bush River Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Mr. Bean of the Methodist Church conducted the memorial and graveside services. The family received friends from 1-2 p.m. prior to the service.

Lt. Col. Adkins (U.S. Army-Ret.) died Mon., Nov. 2, 2015 in Federal Way, Washington. He was born Dec. 31, 1949 in Anderson, S.C., the son of the late Henry Grady Adkins and Mildred Evelyn Wood Adkins. He was a graduate of T. L. Hanna High School and attended The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, graduating May 20, 1972 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE) degree. He was a member of and the Front Guide of The Citadel's Summerall Guards. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army May 20, 1972 and served on active duty through November 1983. He was in the U.S. Army Reserves from November 1983 through May 1998. While in service he attended the U. S. Army Engineer School Officers Basic and Advanced Courses and also the U. S. Army Command and General Staff College.

Mr. Adkins was employed with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers as Chief, Construction Division, U. S. Army Engineer District in Seattle, Washington. Previous to that assignment he was Chief, Construction Division, U. S. Army Far East District in Seoul, Korea. Other assignments included work in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, Fort Lee, Virginia, Fort Stewart, Georgia, the Republic of the Philippines, Fort Worth (Texas) District, USACE, and Afghanistan. As an officer in the U.S. Army's Corps of Engineers, he served as the Chief of the Engineering and Construction Division in the Afghanistan Engineer District in a 2007 deployment.

He is survived by his wife, Un Joo Paek Adkins; sons, Clarence Michael Giddens (Jill); Ho Kyong Adkins, Seattle, Washington; daughter, Ji Yoon Adkins, Seattle, Washington; grandchildren, Cameron Michael Giddens and Taylor Nicole Giddens; brothers, Henry Grady Adkins, Jr. (Marcia Kirkland) of Columbia, S.C., Bruce Lee Adkins (Phyllis Deal) of Charleston, S.C.; nieces and nephews, Carrie Lee Ann Adkins Davies, Susan Mildred Adkins Stabene, Mary Marcene Adkins, Kathryn Lee Deal Adkins, Henry Grady Adkins III, and Andrew Kirkland Adkins. He is predeceased by his first wife, Yon Ho Giddens Adkins and his brother, Allen Bomer Adkins.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice or to The Citadel Foundation 171 Moultrie St., Charleston, S.C. 29409.

He attended The Citadel from Anderson, S.C. While a cadet at The Citadel he was a member of Tango Company of the Fourth Battalion. He held cadet rank of Guidon Corporal, Assistant First Sergeant, and First Lieutenant. His academic major was Civil Engineering and he was granted a Bachelor of Science Civil Engineering (BSCE) May 20, 1972. He held membership in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), The Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), The American Road Builders Association (ARBA), and The Association of the U. S. Army (AUSA). He served on The Citadel Beach House Committee. He was a Distinguished Military Student and a Distinguished Military Graduate. He held a U.S. Army contract badge and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U. S. Army May 20, 1972. He was a Bond Volunteer and was the Front Guide of The Citadel's Summerall Guards.

His Class of 1972 Citadel classmates who attended his funeral were Marshall Ladd, Tom Hilton, Bill Byrd, Wayne Odom, Jeep Ford, and Richard Hodges.
