Howard was the son of Jerry and Dollie (Landers) Clayton. He was a veteran of the U.S. Military. Howard was a member of the Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for 57 years and was a longtime executive board member of the union. He was active in several hunting and fishing clubs along with the NRA. He took great pride in being an active Democrat.
Howard is survived by four daughters; Cathy Jorgensen (Mark) of Adel, Debbie Wildin of Adel, Ginger Coon of Denver, and Marianne Lynch (Tom) of Spirit Lake from his first marriage to Evelyn Clayton; along with one son, Howard K. Clayton, Jr. of Redfield and two stepsons, Rick Dunmire (Lila) of Winterset and Dennis Dunmire (Laura) of Florida, from his current wife Roberta "Betty" Clayton. Also surviving is brother Max Clayton (Doris) of Adel, 17 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and three sisters.
