Merlyn was born on April 27, 1944 in Burden, Kansas to Maxwell and Maxine (Tredway) Bailey. He grew up in Burden where he attended school, graduating from Burden High School in 1962. He attended Arkansas City Junior College and then received his Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from Emporia State University in 1966. He married Marjory Jordan on January 22, 1966 in Emporia, Kansas. Merlyn worked for awhile in Wichita, Kansas at Connecticut Insurance Company and in 1967, the family moved to Enid, Oklahoma and he worked for Sears Roebuck & Co. in retail sales. He later transferred to the Lawton store in 1972 where he was in management, retiring in 1988 after 22 years of service. He was an independent Sales Consultant for Paul Brooker Associates in Wichita, Kansas and later owned and operated Cold River Motel in North Clarendon, Vermont while maintaining the family residence in Lawton. Merlyn then worked as the day shift Housekeeping Supervisor at Comanche County Memorial Hospital and had most recently worked at the Lawton Fort Sill Veterans Center as a Courtesy Technician from 2012 until 2015. He volunteered at Hospice of Southwest Oklahoma, making bereavement calls to check on families. Merlyn enjoyed singing and was a member of the Heaven Bound Quartet. The group sang for churches and sometimes an occasional wedding. He loved any kind of music but mostly enjoyed the gospel music he grew up with. He was a faithful companion to his beloved dogs, Mandy and later Charles Dewayne, taking Charlie on the occasional trip to the Veterans Center to cheer the veterans up. He loved his grandchildren and supported them in all of their activities. He was also a member of the First Baptist East Church. All who knew Merlyn will remember him by his amazing sense of humor.

He is survived by his loving wife, of 49 years, Marjory, of the home; his son and daughter in law, Thomas and Elise Bailey, of Lawton; two daughters and sons in law, Sarah and David Coy and Lydia and Terry Hellickson, all of Lawton; his aunts, Doris Lewis, of Lawton and Lucille Bailey, of Burden, Kansas; grandchildren, Christopher Bailey, Kelly Coy, Melissa Coy, Makenzie Love, Katherine Hellickson, Jordan Bailey, Harrison Love, Chloe Binford, Jacob Binford; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and a host of loving friends.
