Jack moved to McLean, Virginia at an early age. He served in the United States Coast Guard. In 1955 he was appointed a firefighter with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department. Jack retired with the rank of Battalion Chief after 27 years of service.
Jack married Doris McCarter Painter (1931 - 2008). They had four daughters and a son.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Doris and his brother, Wayne N. Akre (1933 - 2003). He is survived by his five children, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A death notice was published in the Nov 1, 2015 edition of the Washington Post.
