PROMINENT FARMER LIVING NEAR CARTHAGE DIES OF BLOOD POISONING ON HIS BIRTHDAY
ILL ONLY A VERY SHORT TIME
ABSCESS IN HIS EAR, WHICH WAS LANCED TWO WEEKS AGO, CAUSES THE FATAL MALADY
Thomas Benton, Henley, 46 years old, a well known resident of Ripley township, died this morning at eight o'clock at his home near Carthage, following a brief illness from bloodpoisoning and other complications.

About two weeks ago Mr. Henley underwent a slight operation by having an abscess in his ear lanced. Complications arose and blood poisoning developed. He had been in a critical condition for the past few days and while his death was expected by the immediate family it came as a great surprise to a large circle of friends.

Mr. Henley was forty-six years old, having been born July 11, 1870. He was a son of Thomas W. and Hannah Henley and had lived in Ripley township all his life. He was known as a progressive farmer and stock raiser and always took an active interest in public affairs. Two years ago Mr. Henley was the Progressive candidate for the state legislature. He was never active in politics, this bring the first time he ever sought an office.

Mr. Henley was married on September 1895 to Miss May Dill. Mr. Henley first attended the Carthage schools and later Indiana University.

He is survived by his widow and one son, Hammel D. Henley, Mrs. Henley is a former chairman of the Sixth District Federated clubs and is widely known. Mr. Henley is also survived by two brothers, Judge William J. Henley of Indianapolis, and Ed. R. Henley of Carthage and three sisters, Mrs. Samuel Newsom, Mrs. Eunice Publow, and Mrs. Harvey Catt, all of Carthage.

The funeral service will be held at the residence Thursday morning at ten o'clock. The casket will be open at the funeral but the remains may be viewed from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Mr. Henley was a member of the Friends church at Carthage.
