William Henry “Bill” Fleck Jr., 85, of formerly of McAlester, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2006, at San Juan Regional Hospital in Farmington, N.M. Born Oct. 2, 1920, in Lehigh, he was the son of William Henry Sr. and Mary Dufour Fleck. He attended school at McAlester High School. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army in Battery D 103d Antiaircraft Artillery AW Battalion in the European Theatre. He was a half-track driver and landed at Normandy. He received the Good Conduct Medal, American Service Ribbon, EAME Ribbon and one Silver Service Star. He married Julia Lee Bond on July 3, 1951, in Van Buren, Ark. He worked for several years at the Naval Ammunition Depot in McAlester as a truck driver. He also worked in Texas and California, retiring from Mather Air Force Base in Sacramento, Calif. after more than 30 years of refueling all types of aircraft. He served as post commander of the Fair Oaks Veterans of Foreign Wars in Fair Oaks, Calif. and was a lifetime member there. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a 50 year member of the McAlester Masonic Lodge No. 9 and 550. Survivors include his wife, Julia Lee Fleck, of the home; a son, Thomas William Bond, of Kirtland, N.M.; six grandchildren, Denise Cantrell, of McAlester, Deborah Bond, of Albuquerque, N.M., Allen and Lavette Prince, of Bloomfield, N.M., Jerry and Sherry Prince, of Kirtland, N.M., Phil Prince, of Kirtland, N.M., and Desirae and Jeff Pettit, of Albuquerque, N.M. Also, 10 great-grandchildren, Charity Ford, of Keota, Tommy Lee Cantrell Jr., of McAlester, Mikey Prince, Kirtland, N.M., Catherine Sherrill Prince, Kirtland, N.M., Brandon Prince, Farmington, N.M., Anthony Pettit, Albuquerque, N.M., Lindy Pettit, Albuquerque, N.M., Matt Pettit, Albuquerque, N.M., Shawn Pettit, Albuquerque, N.M., and Austin Prince Pettit, Albuquerque, N.M. And, five great-great-grandchildren, Michael Cantrell, of McAlester, Ashley Nicole Botts, of Keota, Christopher Thomas Botts, of Keota, and Faye and Josephine Prince, Farmington, N.M.; one great-great-great-granddaughter, Mackenzie Michelle Cantrell, of McAlester. And, a sister, Elise Hanks, Vernon, Texas; brothers and sister-in-law, W.K. and Wanda Berry, of McAlester, and Cotton Berry, Temple, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Betty Berry, of McAlester, and Helen Powell, of McAlester, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Sr. and Mary Fleck; a sister, Mary Catherine Elsing; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ernest and Muriel Berry; a daughter-in-law, Catherine Prince Bond; a great-grandson, Chris Pettit, and nephews, Sandy Elsing, Carl Elsing, James “Butch” Berry, Bruce Berry and Ricky Berry, and niece, Patty Elsing. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Masonic Section of Oak Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Rusty McMullen officiating. Military honors will be provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1098. Masonic services will be provided by McAlester Masonic Lodge 550. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester.
