Henry Amos Tefft was born at Union Village (now Greenwich Village), New York, August 24, 1823 (The Tefft Ancestry. No. 677, pg. 57). He was the son of David Sabin Tefft (Mar. 23, 1799-Feb. 22, 1890) and Eliza Woodward (1803-18??)(The Tefft Family Ancestry. No. 342, pg. 57). After completing his law degree he moved to Racine, Wisconsin, where news of the gold discovery in California called him farther west. He left Wisconsin in 1848 and traveled to Santa Fe, New Mexico, then followed the Gila River route to San Diego. He then headed north, arriving at San Luis Obispo early in 1849 where he opened a law practice. He was elected to serve as his region's representative to the California Constitutional Convention at Monterey from August to October 1849 and then served as a member of California's first State Assembly. He resigned April 20, 1850, to accept a position as Justice of the 2nd Judicial District. Later that same year he married Maria Josefa Dana y Carrillo at the Dana family's Rancho Nipomo on July 9, 1850. Just a year and a half later Henry drowned when the small boat that was conveying him to shore capsized in rough surf off Port San Luis. His body was not recovered. A month after Henry's death his only child was born. His widow Josefa married Samuel Adams Pollard at Mission San Luis Obispo on December 20, 1854, with whom she had five more children.
