Mrs. Clara Belle Stevens, 89, widow of Ames H. Stevens, founder of the Steven's Clothing Store, died at her home at 245 Calhoun at 2:25 p.m. Wednesday following a six-week illness. In the point of church membership, she was the second oldest member of the First Congregational Church, having joined the church on June 4, 1893.
Before her health faded, Mrs. Stevens was active in the Corinthan Circle of the First Congregation Church, Bryant Chapter No. 152, O.E.S., the White Shrine, the Woman's Club, Women's League, Battle Creek, Women's Social Club, the YWCA and the Needlework Guild.
Mrs. Stevens was born in Constantine, Oct. 6, 1862, the daughter of Josiah and Elizabeth (Snow) Hayden, natives of Devorshire, England, who came to the United States and Constantine. A few years after her birth her family moved to Paw Paw, where Mrs. Stevens attended school. It was in Paw Paw that she met Mr. Stevens, and they were married on Nov. 25, 1890.
Mr. and Mrs. Stevens came here to live immediately after their marriage, and in 1898 Mr. Stevens went into partnership with Maurice S. Gordon in a clothing store, purchasing Mr. Gordon's interest in 1910.
Mr. Stevens died her on Nov. 29, 1941, and after his death his nephew, Fred L. Stevens, became president of the store. Mrs. Stevens is survived by several nieces and nephews, including Fred Stevens who resides at 59 Elizabeth, and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Ella Showerman of Paw Paw.
The Rev. Carleton Brooks Miller will conduct funeral services at 2 p.m. Saturday in the First Congregational Church Chapel. Burial will be in the family plot in Oak Hill Cemetery.
