Ethel Marie Hansel, 79, of Stevensville, formerly of Deale, died of heart failure Wednesday at her home after a brief illness.

Mrs. Hansel and her husband, William R. Hansel Sr., lived in Deale for 24 years, where they owned and operated the Hansel Grocery Store and Marina from 1950 to 1975. A native and longtime resident of Brooklyn, Mrs. Hansel attended Eastern High School in Baltimore.

After her husband's death in 1974, she lived with her son on Kent Island, where she was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons, the Over 50s Club and the Ladies Auxiliary of the United Communities Volunteer Fire Department.

She supported the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and the Queen Anne's County Hospice, was an avid Orioles fan and enjoyed crocheting and bingo.

She took an interest in the commercial watermen on Kent Island, greeting them at the dock and inquiring about their catch.

Surviving are her sons, William R. Hansel Jr. of Glen Burnie and Lawrence G. Hansel of Stevensville; her daughter, Trudy Hoxter of Chester; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one brother, Maurice C. Wood of Glen Burnie.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, Ritchie Highway and Robinson Road. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Brooklyn.
