BLUMER, Carl Hervey

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Carl on the evening of December 14, 2012, at the age of 85.
Carl was born in Regina, Saskatchewan. During the depression he moved with his parents and sister Yvonne to a homestead in north-central Saskatchewan near the village of Paddockwood. In 1944, after completing Grade 11 at Luther College in Regina he joined the Merchant Navy as a steward on an Eastern Arctic Patrol.
The following year he completed Grade 12 at Craven High School in Saskatchewan. From 1945-1947 he worked for the CNR hotel system at the Chateau Laurier Hotel in Ottawa and at Jasper Park Lodge.
After Normal School training and a second year of University at the University of Saskatchewan he set out on his teaching career. Starting with the Prince Albert Indian School for one year and then three years in the Lloydminster School unit for three years in un-graded classrooms.
He continued his teaching with the Edmonton Public School Board in 1953 where he met his wife to be (58 years!), Dorothy Lorraine Grundberg. Lorraine and Carl were married in Camrose on June 26, 1954.
A year after marriage, Carl and Lorraine taught for a private crown company (Eldorado Mining and Refining Company) at Beaverlodge Lake near Uranium City, Saskatchewan.
Following that Carl returned to teach in various roles with the Edmonton School system, working for different periods with Cerebral Palsied children as well as an Emotionally Disturbed Class at University of Alberta Hospital.
Carl completed his B. of Ed. in 1961 extramurally while teaching, driving cab part- time and raising two young sons, Doug and Randy. He took a two-year sabbatical from 1963-64 from the Board for Graduate Study at the University of Alberta and later received his M. Ed. degree from the U of Alberta.
Many years of employment followed as an Elementary School Counselor and two wonderful years in Germany with the Department of National Defense as School Psychologist.
Carl spent his post retirement days catering to his two grandchildren Matthew and Zach and traveling the world. He could be counted on to transit across the country at short notice to perform Grandfather duty whenever called upon. He also had an enormous network of friends and relatives that he stayed in touch with throughout his journeys. He was known by many for his generosity of spirit and he loved to visit and stay in touch with his globe trotting pals, family members and Swiss relatives.
He was dearly loved and will be fondly remembered by his wife Lorraine, sister Yvonne, surviving son Randy, daughter in law Bev, grandsons Matthew and Zachary and extended family who have already expressed their condolences and well wishes.
We expect he was greeted warmly at the gates of heaven by his predeceased son Doug and his favorite hound Alfie. We will miss him dearly. No funeral service by request.
