Drowned while scuba diving.

The whereabouts are still unknown of a scuba diver whose car was found abandoned at Canyon Lake Jan. 7. Wesley Andrew Brooks of San Antonio is missing and presumed drowned. He was last seen Jan. 6, and his car was found the next day at Comal Park. The car contained his clothing but none of his scuba diving gear. No divers have gone down to look for Brooks' body due to bad weather. Game warden Neil Ethercdge says he is holding off the search until the weather improves. "We're not even sure he's down there," Etheredge said. "I hate to put people in (the water) and take a chance of getting hurt. We can't do anything for him now." The area where Brooks was last seen by a fisherman is near the same place where two scuba divers have previously drowned. The game warden described the lake bottom there as rocky and very brushy, with waters 100 feet deep arid more in spots. Ethercdge said he is unable lo use body drags in that area of the lake, and murky waters have afforded little visibility for divers to search for the body.

February 12, 1985, Meanwhile, Etheredge said cold, murky water continues to hamper diving efforts to locate the body of Wesley Andrew Brooks, 36, of San Antonio. "We're going to have to wait for some warmer weather (on that one),".Etheredge said. "That water's about 45 degrees, and that's too cold — especially when we don't even know where he is to start with." Brooks' car, containing clothing but no scuba gear was found Jan. 7 at Comal Park. Authorities fear the man was diving solo in the lake, and have listed him as an apparent drowning victim.

Skeletal remains found at lake Believed to be those of Wesley Brooks

Comal County officials are continuing efforts to identify the skeletal remains of a man believed to be Wesley Andrew Brooks, of San Antonio, who disappeared at Canyon Lake 18 months ago. Divers retrieved the body Monday from waters 60 feet deep off the point at Comal Park on Canyon Lake. Game Warden Neel Etheredge said the skeleton was found in diving gear matching the description of Brooks' equipment "to a T." Etheredge added that no one else has been reported missing in Canyon Lake. Two College Station men discovered the body and equipment Sunday while diving in Canyon Lake. Dwight Caldwell and Ron Roberts reportedly spotted the diving equipment and after closer examination realized it held human remains. They reported their find to Comal County Sheriff's officials, who began the search. Etheredge said Sunday's search was cut short because of reduced visibility underwater. "It's almost like a jungle under there," he said. Divers began the search again Monday morning. They located the body about 3 p.m. Diver Gary Caldwell, who assisted in the search, said the visibility underwater Monday was about 10 feet. "All you have to do is knock a (tree) branch and it drops a pile of silt that reduces visibility real fast," he said. "I never tell anyone to dive here. There's just too many accidents," Caldwell said. Etheredge said the remains were taken to Austin this morning for examination.

Keys Lead to Identification

A car key found with the skeletal remains of a man recovered Monday from Canyon Lake helped identify the remains as those of a 36-year-old San Antonio diver who disappeared more than a year ago.

Comal County Peace Justice Fred Stewart identified the remains as those of Wesley Brooks when his widow, Brenda, used the key to start her husband's car Wednesday at their home at 14314 Modesta Place.

Stewart said the keys were discovered during an autopsy by the Travis County medical examiner's office Tuesday in the scuba suit the dead man was wearing.

Brooks disappeared while on a scuba outing Jan. 7, 1985, at Canyon Lake. He worked as a microscope salesman for Nikon Inc.

His car was found abandoned nears the banks of Canyon Lake in Comal Park.

Stewart said the clothing found on the remains pulled from 60 feet of water in the south end of Canyon Lake Monday matched those of Brooks.

He has ruled the death an accidental drowning.

A noon memorial service is scheduled Saturday at the Mission Park Funeral Chapel. The remains will be cremated.
