Irwin H. Heydt, oldest active barber in Allentown and widely known as an accomplished musician, died yesterday at 2 p.m. at his home, 626 N. 19th St. He was in his 80th year. Heydt had a long career as a businessman and musician. For the last 20 years he operated a barber shop in Allentown, for 17 years at the 19th Street address, where the established the first barber appointment service in the city. He was busy in his shop daily until he was stricken last Saturday. He studied music and learned the barber trade at an early age. He operated barber shops in Northampton and Fullerton before 1909, when he moved to Allentown and entered the automobile business as a salesman for the Allen Motor Company. Several years later he moved to Reading, where he was senior partner in the Heydt Motor Company, which became one of the largest distributors of automobiles in Berks County. Twenty years ago he disposed of his Reading business interests and returned to Allentown and resumed his former trade as barber. Heydt served as organist in churches in Northampton, Carbon County and Reading. He also played the violin in orchestras and string ensembles and was flutist with Reading's Ringgold and Shrine bands. For some time he resided in New Bethlehem, Pa., where he was engaged as a teacher of music. Although he did not play professionally in recent years, he never lost his interest in music. Heydt was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Fullerton, and the Keystone Fire Company, Allentown. He was born in the Huffs Church section of Berks County, a son of the late Nathaniel and Anna, nee Hoffman, Heydt. In his youth the family moved to Lehigh County, living for many years in Egypt and Fullerton. He was twice married. He is survived by his wife, the former Mrs. Sarah, nee Kistler, Weiser. His first wife, the former Miss Martha Kistler, died eight years ago. He also was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.
