Johann Viereck was born in Stettin, Prussia/Germany (now Szczecin, Poland) on the Oder River which empties into the Baltic Sea. He captained the "Emma Louise" across the Atlantic Ocean, around Cape Horn of South America and landed in San Francisco. From there he chartered a sloop and sailed north to Metlakatla, a Tsimshian village in the Queen Charlotte Islands. There he bought an Indian maiden named Maria Gilbert who was knowledgeable in the ways of trading into Alaska. Viereck taught Maria English and they settled in Point Roberts, Washington. John Viereck operated a trading post and a saloon on the spit on Point Roberts.
Sadly,he died at their homestead in DoeBay on Orcas Island from smallpox at the age of 68.
