He made his first trip to CA via the Isthmus in 1849 and engaged in mining in Butte County, where he met with gratifying success. He returned East and was married. In 1852 accompanied by his wife Martha, returned to the West, crossing the plains in a train of covered wagons drawn by oxen, and located in Eldorado County, where he mined at Indian Diggings. He later removed with his family to Iowa Hill, Placer County, where he engaged in mining and logging with ox teams.
