James Cephus Lay was born 28 Jul 1875
in Bear Creek Township, Searcy Co., AR.
He was the s/o William James Lay and
Louisa Callie Moore Lay. He married
16 Apr 1899 in Marshall, Searcy Co.,
AR to Rachel Arzona Reece Dampf d/o
Samuel Reece and Mary Ann Ott Reece.
He died 29 Apr 1950 in Henryetta,
Okmulgee Co., OK.

James and Arzona had ten children:
Arvilla; Wm. Samuel; Minnie Sally;
Grady Henry;Floy Ann; Winnie Faye;
Gladys Pearl; Howard Stermon;
Tillman Gregory and Ivan Frankie
"Ivy". He also raised the child
of Arzona's first marriage to Cephas
Agustus Dampf - Hattie
Mae.

Note: This is my grandfather. I
remember as a child that he always
said that his name was "Jeams Cephus"
and not "James" and he was very adamant
about it. Grandmother always called
him "Jeams". For some reason,
beginning with the 1900 census, they
changed his first name to "James".
Perhaps the enumerator didn't understand
or couldn't spell Jeams.
I also remember some of the people in
our home town calling him "J. C."

I have used "James" as a first name
as that is the way it is on the
headstone - "James C. Lay". Also,
the year of birth on the headstone is
incorrect. He was born in 1875 not
1876.
