There was a steamboat on the Mississippi River that was transporting (among other people) men released from Andersonville at the end of the war. The steamboat exploded and most of those on it perished. They did not have a complete list of the men from Andersonville. It is possible he was on the steamboat and perished but no one can know for sure.
The Sultana had survivors of Andersonville on board who died. James' seargeant died and was buried at Andersonville, James is not buried at Andersonville. So he was likely a survivor and possibly on the Sultana. The explosion was April 27 1865, which if he survived Andersonville, it would be his date of death. The explosion was just north of Memphis, Tennessee.
The pictured memorial stone is located in Pikes Peak, Indiana, in Brown County of men from the area who served in the Civil war. It is not located on cemetery property but it is the only thing close to a burial place James will ever have.
