William Ray Rust, 84, son of Robert Edward and Stella O. Sigman Rust, was born Sept. 30, 1921, at Solo. He died Aug. 8, 2006, at his home at Cabool. He met his life-long sweetheart, Zella Erwin, as small children while their mothers attended Ladies Aid Society meetings. They were married Dec. 21, 1941. Mr. Rust enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942. He was an aviation machinist mate until he was honorably discharged in 1945.
The Rusts returned to Cabool, where he hauled milk, owned an auto and truck repair business, operated the Junction Drive-in and drove a truck for Mid-America Dairymen until he retired. He took his seven grandchildren on a fishing and camping trip to Beaver Creek and allowed them to feed green apple bubble gum to the horses, throw shot puts on the carport, drive through the yard with the pickup and do rain dances through the corn rows in the garden. Summers were filled with trail rides and going to the saddle club. He was a long-time member of the Cabool Christian Church and enjoyed the men's fellowship. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife; daughter, Gail Rae; a granddaughter and great-grandson. Surviving are his son, Derald of Shenandoah, Iowa; daughters, Karen Rust and Renee Pearson of Cabool; brothers, Wayne Rust of Cabool, Glen Rust of Ash Grove and Bobbie Lee Rust of Springfield; sister, Madge Elmore of Houston; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Services were Aug. 10 at the Cabool Christian Church with Bob Martin officiating. Burial was in the Oak Dale Cemetery near Solo
