George Allen Read
G. Allen Read passed away on April 9, 2009. Allen was born in Minneapolis, MN, July 22, 1927. His family relocated to Seattle WA when he was nine years old. He later graduated from the University of Washington where he served as President of the Lutheran Student Association. He attended seminary in Rock Island, IL and was ordained into the Augustana Lutheran Church. He was called to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Chandler, AZ, where he served for five years. He was then called to serve Immanuel Lutheran Church of San Jose, CA from 1959 - 1973.
Later, Allen worked at the Santa Clara County Department of Social Services, as a Vocational Counselor. He was an active member in historical groups, including the Argonauts, San Jose Historical Museum, Pioneers of California, and regularly attended M.A.E.P. classes of California history. His love of learning also extended to classes in the Norwegian language at the Sons of Norway. He also served on the PFLAG Scholarship Committee and was on the PFLAG Speakers Bureau. He was an active member in the life of St Timothy's Lutheran Church of San Jose, where he served as president of the congregation.
Allen is survived by his wife of almost 54 years, Darlene Read, his children, Kristin Mundy (Ralph), John Read (Diane), Thor Read, eight grandchildren, his sister Lois Bauman (David), and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2009, 11:00 am, at St. Timothy's Lutheran Church, 5100 Camden Ave, San Jose CA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St Timothy's Lutheran Church, or the American Stroke Association .
