James was the son of William Calfee and Mary Wilson.

Born in Wythe Co., VA, he moved to Gladeville, Mercer Co. (now WV).

His cabin was the location of the first county court where Mercer County and the town of Princeton were first conceived and organized.

He and his wife Hannah were the parents of Charles Whitlock, Mary "Polly", William, Jane, Elizabeth, Nancy, Andrew Jackson, Cynthia, Wilson and Henderson French.

None of their daughters married and were called the Maids Calfee.
