LOMETA, TX -- John Clardy of Lometa, Texas died Monday, August 14, 2006.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 17, 2006 at the Stacy - Wilkins Funeral Home in Goldthwaite, Texas. Graveside services and burial will follow at the Senterfitt Cemetery near Lometa in Lampasas County, Texas. Visitation will be on Wednesday, August 16, 2006 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Stacy - Wilkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Clardy was born on February 11, 1924 in Brown County, Texas and graduated from Brownwood High School in 1942. After enrolling at Abilene Christian College, Mt. Clardy joined the United States Navy V-12 Officers Training Program in December 1942. Mr. Clardy received his commission as an Ensign upon his graduation from the Navy Midshipmen School at Columbia University, New York, on October 26, 1944. Following amphibious training, Mr. Clardy was assigned to the U.S.S. Landing Ship Medium 395 which served in the Pacific Theater and the occupation of Japan.

Mr. Clardy returned to Abilene Christian College following the War where he was captain of the basketball team under Coach A. B. Morris, winning two Texas Conference championships before his graduation in 1948. Upon graduation, Mr. Clardy joined the Professional Service of the Boy Scouts of America and, during his 38-year career, he served the scouting movement in several councils located throughout Texas and the Southwest. In 1972 Mr. Clardy joined the National Council and served until his retirement in 1986.

Since his retirement to Lometa with his devoted wife of 59 years, Evelyn Kirby Clardy, a native of Lampasas County, Mr. Clardy has served in a variety of voluntary positions including Lampasas County Historical Commission Chairman, Senterfitt Cemetery President, President of the Lometa Lions Club, Commander of the Lometa American Legion Post No. 116, Scout Master of Troop 26, President of the Comanche Trail Council, Boy Scouts of America and the National Chairman of the Members of the Church of Christ for Scouting where he was presented with the Faithful Servant Award in 1991. Mr. Clardy was also honored with the Silver Beaver Award from the Comanche Trail Council in 1998.

Throughout his lifetime Mr. Clardy also found time to travel, visiting 14 foreign countries and all 50 states, and authored a memoir of his Depression Era childhood entitled Confessions of the Willis Creek Gang and, most recently a practical study manuscript for leading others to Christ, Salvation 101. The Willing Christian, a manual to assist volunteers in the church, is currently undergoing editing and will be published posthumously.

Mr. Clardy's survivors include: his beloved wife Evelyn, their sons, Brad Clardy of Lubbock, Texas, Mark Clardy and his wife, Sara of Woodbridge, Virginia, Richard and his wife, Desiree of Abilene, and Travis and his wife, Judy of Nacogdoches; a brother, Len Clardy of Alpharetta, Georgia; and 10 grandchildren.

Mr. Clardy was preceded in death by his parents Earnest and Beulah Clardy, and an infant son, Douglas De Clardy.
