Grace Avery was born March 2, 1908, to James Thomas Sockwell and Willie Maude Day Sockwell in the Sunshine Community in Southeast Fannin County, Texas. They moved to Pecan Gap where she attended school, graduating in 1926.
She married Richard Theo Avery in Ladonia, Texas on June 19, 1926, and they became the parents of four sons. They began raising their family in the Dial Community before moving to Honey Grove in the late 1940's.
Mrs. Avery is a member of Main Street Presbyterian Church and had served as an officer of the Women's Church Circle. She was Noble Grand as a member of the Rebekah Lodge and had been a member of the Honey Grove Garden Club and Honey Grove Book Club. She is a retired cotton buyer for the Farmer's Gin in Honey Grove.
Family deaths include her husband, Theo Avery, in 1990; her eldest son, Rev. Richard D. Avery, in1997; a grandson, Stanley Wayne Avery, and a great-grandson, Jacob Wayne Avery, in 2004; her parents, Tom and Willie Sockwell; and her seven sisters, Mattie McDonnold, Ruby Smith, Gladys Fielding, Thelma Lay, Faye Richardson, Mozelle Massad, and Tomy Wilhite.
