Roland was the son of Anthony Albert and Alfaretta Church, who married on 29 Jan 1874 in Marshall Co., Indiana. The couple had six children together—Charles (c.1876), Frank E. (c.1877), Nora (Oct 1881), Elmer (Apr 1883), Harvey Albertus "Bert" (Dec 1889), and Roland (28 Dec 1896).

I found the family on the 1880 Census, living in Madison, St. Joseph Co., Indiana. Anthony Albert, aged 28, was farming for a living. Alfaretta, aged 26, was home with sons Charles, aged 4, and Frank, aged 3.

Daughter Nora joined the family the following year, but because of the loss of the 1890 Census, she would never appear on a census record with her parents and siblings as she married husband John Thayer on 31 Oct 1898.

The 1900 Census placed the family in Plymouth's North Township, Marshall County. Anthony, aged 49, was busy with the farm. Alfaretta, aged 48, reported that she had had six children, and that all six had survived to that census. There with their parents were Elmer, aged 17, Bertie, aged 10, and Roland, aged 5.

In 1910, the family was living on Courtland St. in Plymouth's North Township. Anthony, aged 59, was living on his own income. Alfaretta, aged 58, again reported that all six of her six children were alive. Only Roland, aged 14, was still living at home with his parents.

On his WWI registration card, Roland, aged 21, reported that he was farming for a living. He was described as being of medium height and weight with gray eyes and brown hair.

I couldn't find Roland on the 1920 Census, but on 19 Oct 1920, he married Susan "Susie" Elizabeth Holland in Marshall County. Susie was the daughter of Harrison "Harry" Anderson Holland and Mary E. Thomas.

In 1930, Roland and Susie were living in La Paz, Marshall Co., Indiana. Husband Roland, aged 35, was working as a janitor in a schoolhouse. Susie, aged 30, was about six months pregnant with son Ronald, who made his appearance five days after the Fourth of July on 9 Jul 1930.

I found the three of them together on the 1940 Census, still living in La Paz. Roland, aged 43, did not have anything noted in the occupation line. Susie, aged 40, was home with son Ronald, aged 9.

On his 27 Apr 1942 WWII registration, Roland, aged 45, reported that he was employed by the La Paz Grain Company. Wife Susie was noted as the person who would always know his address. He measured in at 5' 8 ½" and weighed in at 180 pounds, with hazel eyes, graying hair and a ruddy complexion.

Susie and Roland spent thirty three years together before death parted them, first claiming Susie on 21 Jun 1953 at age 54, her heart failing her. Roland lived another four years without his helpmate and companion before departing this earth in 1957.

Susie and Roland's son Ronald eventually married Martha E. Whitmer. He lived to age 69, passing on 3 Oct 1989. (I have asked to have him linked to his parents. His F.A.G. memorial is 51008273.)
