Monsignor Thomas O'Malley was ordained a Catholic priest in his native Ireland on June 21, 1931. He came to the Los Angeles diocese that same year, and served at the Cathedral Chapel when it was located on Detroit Street during the 1940s. During his years in Sierra Madre, he expanded St. Rita School, and in 1967 planned a new church for his growing parish, which was completed in 1970. Msgr. O'Malley spent his later years in San Pedro, CA, where he died at age 86.
