Willard Eben Alexander, Sr., 93, of Underhill Center, passed away at the Respite House of Vermont on Feb. 17, 2000.

Willard was born in Saxton's River, Feb. 12, 1907, the son of the late Florence Forgette Alexander and George Perry Alexander.

After graduating from Vermont Academy and Colby College, he moved to Hartford, Conn., where he was employed by his family's Sisson Drug Company. In 1936 he married the former Ethel Janes of West Hartford, Conn. Ethel predeceased him in 1986. Willard retired from the Hartford Fire Insurance Company in 1972, at which time he and Ethel moved from West Hartford to Underhill Center where they enjoyed retirement with their children and grandchildren. From 1994 until the present, Willard made his home with his daughter, Betsy and her husband, Jim Cole, in Morristown. In 1998 they moved into the home Willard and Ethel had shared for 14 years in Underhill Center.

Besides his daughter, Betsy, and her husband and their children: Wendy Jowett and her husband, Andrew, of East Hampstead, N.H., Lisa Vanderby and her husband, Kevin, of Manhattan, Mont., Susan Faunce of Mendocino, Calif., Heidi Faunce of Albion, Calif. and Wayland Cole of Blue Hill, Maine; Willard leaves his son, John Alexander and his wife, Anne, of Westmore and their children: John Alexander and his wife, eryl, and sons Zachary and Jesse of Carmel, Calif., Jennifer and her husband, Earl Whitmore, and their son Benjamin of Brownington, Stephen and his wife, Devon MacLeod, and their daughter Gaylen of Lincoln, Sarah Alexander and her sons, Rohan and Ezra, and their father, Michael Racine, of Orleans, and Eben Alexander, also of Orleans. Willard also leaves his son, Willard Alexander Jr. and his wife, Kate, of Morristown, N.J. and their children: Meghan in Washington, D.C., and Tim Baldwin in Steamboat Springs, Colo.

Willard was predeceased by his great-grandson, Ian MacLeod Alexander; also by a sister, Helen Frey; and brothers Perry and Donald.

A celebration to honor our father, grandfather, great-grandfather and community friend will be in the spring, the date to be announced in ""The Burlington Free Press" in May.

In lieu of flowers, Willard's family suggests contributions be made to the Respite House of Vermont, 99 Allen Brook Lane, Williston, Vt. 05495, for the tender care given to its residents and their families. Gifford Funeral Home, 22 Depot St., Richmond, Vt., in charge of arrangements.
