Obit from H. C. Ouzts (#47627433); W. Dummerston VT - Richard B. "Dick" Carter, 75, of Lyons Street, formerly of Vernon CT, died August 18, 2011 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon NH. Mr. Carter was born in Pittsfield MA on March 9, 1936 the son of Robert and Harriet (Richards) Carter. He was raised and educated in Pittsfield and later proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force from April 1957 until his honorable discharge in January 1962. For many years he worked as an auto mechanic in Manchester CT and previously had been employed at Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford CT. A resident of West Dummerston for the past ten years, he was a member of the Evening Star Grange in Dummerston. Of his leisure time activities, he enjoyed camping, drag racing in his earlier years and time shared with his family. He was also an avid Boston Red Sox fan. A quiet unassuming man, he was known for his integrity and spirit of friendship. On July 1, 1978 in Pittsfield, MA he was married to Virginia Hadley who survives. His first wife, Ruby Bukowski predeceased him. Besides his loving wife of 33 years he leaves, one son, Robert L. Carter of AR, three daughters, Deborah O'Sullivan, Carol Royce and Judith Grindal all of CT, a step-daughter, Jennifer Dion of Townshend, two step-sons, Allan Nelson and David Nelson both of CT one brother Edward Carter of CA, one sister Mary Ann Carter of TX, 16 grandchildren, three great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be private with burial in Middlebury VT.
