Randall, the son of Winford W. Choate and Jeane L. Choate of Walnut Creek California enlisted in the US Marine Corps on September 21, 1967 in Oakland. He arrived in Vietnam on March 3, 1968 where he was assigned for duty and served with Company E, 2d Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

With it's Command Post at An Hoa in August, the 2d Battalion continued it's participation in Operation MAMELUKE THRUST II with it's primary mission of locating and destroy the enemy in Quang Nam Province.

On August 3, some 2 kilometers northeast of An Hoa near the Phu Nhuan village complex a Marine tripped a wire and detonated a booby trapped 155m artillery round the enemy had suspended in a tree. The explosion killed three Marines and wounded several others. LCpl Choate was one of the casualties, he was killed by shrapnel from the hostile explosive device.
