My mother's high school sweetheart. He joined the navy out of high school and was in Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked. He was in Midway as well. He was aboard the New Orleans, providing screening for the Enterprise. Later they joined the Yorktown and joined battle. The front of his ship was blown off in a battle off of New Guinea, by a torpedo. They did a quick repair in Australia and then had to back the ship to Pearl Harbor for repairs. Edwin Blockwitz earned 18 battle stars, survived WWII came home with PTSD, which no one understood then and killed himself.
