Ralph L. Bateman, age 89, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Wednesday, February 26, 2014, at a local care center. Memorial services will be on Tuesday, March 4, at 2:00 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Chapel in Watertown. The family is requested to meet at the chapel by 1:30 p.m. for a prayer service. Rev. Guy Crawford will officiate. Music will be recordings provided by Sherwin and Pam Linton. There will be no visitation.

Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown. Military graveside honors will be conducted by the Frank H. Adams Post #750 of Veterans of Foreign Wars of Watertown, and the Codington County Post #17 of the American Legion of Watertown. Honorary pallbearers will be Ralph's former bowling team buddies.

Ralph was born on February 1, 1925, at El Paso, TX, to Ralph and Meta (Ormsbee) Bateman. The family moved to Mexico when Ralph was six weeks of age, and lived there for seven years. They then moved to California for three years, and returned to Mexico for eight years. Ralph graduated from High School in San Antonio, TX in 1942. Following graduation, he enlisted in the Merchant Marines and served during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.

On October 5, 1975, Ralph married Lois Goodman in Watertown. After their marriage the couple lived in Watertown. Ralph remained in the Merchant Marines until retiring August 1, 1987, after 44 ½ years.

He was a member of Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Watertown. He was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and the American Merchant Marine Veterans. Ralph enjoyed bowling and traveling.

Ralph is survived by his wife, Lois, of Watertown; two children: Robert (Kathleen) Bateman of Splendora, TX, and Barbara Counts of Houston, TX; four grandchildren; one sister, Phyllis (Don) Neumann, of Harlingen, TX; and one half-sister, Sue Anne (Guy) Crawford, of Andrews, TX.

He was preceded in death by one son, Richard, and his parents.
