Dr. John Jacob Crane was for many years a prominent physician of New York City, having been for more than a quarter of a century one of the visiting surgeons to Bellevue Hospital. He was a graduate of Princeton College in 1840, and of the College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York, four years later. About fifteen years ago he retired from active practice and made his home at Ivy Nook, in New Haven. Dr. Crane was married October 29, 1874, to Mrs. Caroline Whitney Suydam, widow of Ferdinand Suydam, and the daughter of the late Stephen Whitney of New York City. Their combined wealth permitted them to travel to Europe regularly.
