Mrs. W.W. Cole is Called Near Fairfield
Mrs. Wheeler Cole, 61, passed away suddenly last Thursday at her home 1-1/2 miles west of Fairfield, following a heart attack. The Teton county resident, who had many friends in the Choteau area, was laid to rest Sunday after funeral services were conducted at the Community Congregational church in Fairfield.
Mrs. Cole had been a charter member of the Congregational church, which was organized when the town was started. She was the first president of the Community Ladies Aid and served as president of the group for eight years. She was also a past president of Teton's Oldest Settlers.
The last rites were attended by hundreds of persons from all over the county. Present were a brother and sister of the deceased, W.B. Crittenden and Mrs. Earl Zimmerman, both of Seattle.
Mrs. Cole, nee Maude Ethel Crittenden was born Dec. 10, 1884, in a sod house in the prairie country of Nebraska, not far from Hastings. When she was six years old she moved with her family to Bozeman, Mont., where she received her education.
After graduation from Gallatin high school in 1902, she taught country schools in that vicinity for two years. In 1905 she came to Teton county to teach school on the Burton bench near Farmington, where she taught for three years.
On June 24, 1908, she was married to William Wheeler Cole at Bozeman. Immediately after their marriage, they drove overland since the roads were washed out by the floods of 1908, to what is now Fairfield community. It was then a sparsely settled district. Here she lived all her married life. Mrs. Cole taught school for one year after her marriage. The school was the first school in what is now the Fairfield school district.
In passing she leaves to mourn her husband, William W. Cole; one son, William Wesley Cole; two daughters, Nancy Jane Cole and Joyce Hutchins, and two grandchildren, all of Fairfield. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Earl Zimmerman of Seattle, and Mrs. Herbert Voris of Coachella, Calif., and three brothers, W.B. Crittenden of Seattle, and Albert and Dean Crittenden of Ellensburg, Wash.
