RINGLING — Services for Oleta Marshall, 92, of Ringling are scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2015, at Asphaltum Assembly of God Church north of Ringling with the Rev. Jerry Gonzales officiating. Interment will follow at Ringling Memorial Cemetery. Services are under the care and direction of Alexander Funeral Home of Ringling.
Oleta was born Sept. 1, 1923, to the late Virgele Augusta Walker and Eula Jane Brown. She departed this life Sunday, Oct. 4, 2015, at Wilson.
Oleta grew up in Wilson where she attended school. She was employed as a waitress at several restaurants many years locally prior to her employment at both the Marietta and Ringling Pants Factory as a seamstress retiring in 1989 at its closing with 27 years employment.
Former Oleta Walker Johnson was united in marriage to Lonie Eugene Marshall on Aug. 9, 1964, at the First Baptist Church in Wilson and they soon after made the move to Ringling where they lived for the remainder of her life. Oleta and Eugene recently celebrated their marriage of 51 years together.
Oleta enjoyed working in the yard, reading newspapers, family dinners, family events, cooking and she always believed that adding bacon grease and sugar always made everything a little better. She loved going to restaurants, community events, and any event that her family was involved in. Oleta never forgot a birthday of a great or great-great-grandchild as she always sent them a card with money, also remembering them the same way at Christmas. She was a strong, extraordinarily unique woman who raised four children on a shoestring, teaching them the value of a dollar, hard work, and the importance of family.
Preceding her in death were her parents; four brothers, John “Dub”, Utah “Pud”, Virgele Jr. “Buz” and George; one sister, Billie Jo Tolbert; one son-in-law, Don Bone; one grandson-in-law, John Sharp; and a dear friend she considered as her daughter, Goldie Broadbent.
Survivors include her husband, Lonie “Eugene” Marshall of the home; son, Carlos Johnson and wife, Pam; daughters, Betty Bone, Shirley Stephenson and Linda Morrissey; 10 grandchildren, Terri Sharp, Joy Dawn Harmon and husband, Troy, RaeAnn Frare and husband, Alan, Jana Kaye Brown and husband, Ronnie, Felicia Brown and husband, Mike, Monica Hardaway and husband, Edmund, Donna Jane Stephenson, Holly Dunn and husband, Jerry, Chris Huff and wife, Karen and Stacey Rice and husband, Bryan; 28 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren and one on the way; one brother, Gene Walker; and numerous other family and friends.
Pallbearers will be Oleta’s grandsons and great-grandsons, Alan Frare, Troy Harmon, Jerry Dunn, Edmund Hardaway, Mike Brown, Ronnie Brown, Marshal Harmon and Christopher Frare.
Honorary bearers are Bill Stroud, Bud Scifres, Lyndon VanBuskirk, Ernest Marshall and the remainder of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Donations may be made in Memory of Oleta to the Ringling Nutrition Center or the Asphaltum Assembly of God Church kitchen fund. Family visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. this evening at Alexander Funeral Home in Ringling.
