Nash Ballard, 86, died Sunday, July 12, 1998, at the North Mississippi Medical Center after a sudden illness. He was a native of Lee County and a resident of Tupelo most of his life. He was a retired employee of Rockwell International after 17 years. He was a former assistant police chief of Tupelo and a former firefighter for the Tupelo Fire Department. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and an avid gardener.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today in the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Johnny Cox and the Rev. Scott Witcher officiating. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Park.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Dovie Ballard of Tupelo; one daughter, Joan Bennett, and her husband, Charlie, of Nettleton; two sons, James N. Ballard Jr. and his wife, Margaret, of Saltillo, and William E. Ballard of Tupelo; one brother, Leroy Ballard of Plantersville; eight grandchildren, Barbara Benson, Debra Bowen, Janice Hawkins, Susan Ward, Cindy Davis, Jeff Ballard, Brian Ballard and Jason Ballard; 10 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Randy Benson, Jeff Ballard, Doug Brown, Ted Ward, Blake Stein and Brian Ballard.
