After graduating from Baird High School in 1941, Aubrey went to work for First National Bank in Baird, In September 1942 (during WWII), he joined the United States Marine Corp where he attained the rank of Corporal. He served 1942-1945 in the Marines, C Battery, 1st Battalion, 12th Regiment, and 3rd Marine Division. He participated in the battles for Bougainville, Guam, and Iwo Jima, alongside his brothers Lee and Jerry Loper (their mother always waiting for mail from them at 5:00 a.m.). His unit received two Presidential unit citations and one Navy unit citation. He was very active in the Third Marine Division Association.
He left Baird, spent many years in Oregon, retiring from US Bank in 1984 and returning to his beloved Baird, Texas with Charlotte, to be close to both of their elderly mothers. Aubrey a respected community leader, always giving of himself, his time, his love, with his involvement in the American Cancer Society, Baird Cemetery Association, Mission of Miracles, Meals on Wheels (Baird and Hewitt), and numerous others, receiving 2010 Community Builders Award, presented by Baird Masonic Lodge 522, assisted with building the new Baird Baptist parsonage, spent many hours working on the Shrader farm in Scranton during retirement, had a hand in home projects of uncountable family members. Like to get dirty and bleed wearing his coveralls! He was a "delight". Aubrey was a member of the First Baptist Church of Baird, Texas.
He is survived by wife of 38 years, Charlotte Loper, daughters, Jerry Paustian (Dave), Glenda Cline, Kathy Savage (Paul), Vicki Freeland, Suzette Lockwood (Richard), son, Roger Freeland (Brenda), sisters-in-law, Joanie Shrader, Betty Loper, brother-in-law, Leon Freeman, 11 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, 7 great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews, all who have loved him dearly.
